How to Promote Yourself Successfully

Hello, my name is Deanna Murray and I am The Director of Marketing and Strategy at Build.Automate Inc in Washington DC.

Knowing how to promote yourself successfully is an extremely valuable skill when you’re looking for a job, trying to generate clients or just looking to make further business connections.

The successful self-promoter knows the art of promoting ones’ self is not about who can brag the longest and loudest – it’s about who can elegantly and informatively demonstrate their abilities with grace and form.

Being able to do this is a must in today’s business world. And while some do it more delicately – or more outlandishly – than others, how you are perceived does affect your ability to make a good impression.
Here are some tips:

  • Always keep your business cards handy. Never leave home without them. It’s much more official to hand a person your business card than to have to ask around for a pen or write on your own hand. Business cards are easy to have and cheap to make. Keep em handy.
  • Always keep your commitments. When you have a business meeting or an appointment, keep it. Don’t blow it off or reschedule unless it is unavoidable. Of course, this happens – but don’t make it habit.
  • Make sure people know what you do. Have a 60-second elevator pitch at the ready to explain what you do and what you are about. This pitch is not a ‘cheer’ touting how awesome you are – it is plain-English text giving insight into what you do and why it is important.
  • Send Thank You and Congrats Cards. With the advent of email, no one ever sends snail mail anymore. People actually notice these days when they get a nice card, handwritten in the mail. It leaves an impression – a good impression.
  • The more referrals you give, the more you’ll get. Good networking demands you share the wealth. Create a group of people that you exchange referrals with. If you are generous with contacts you know and trust, those same contacts will be the same with you.
  • Be accessible. I think one of the worst excuses for not getting back to a person who might hire you is ‘I’ve been busy.’ Nothing says ‘I value your business’ more than actually being available to your clients or possible clients. Infact, I’d suggest you remove ‘I’ve been busy’ out of your excuse list all together.
  •  Keep all your profiles and resumes up to date. Whether it is an online resume or your linkedin profile, make sure they are all up-to-date with current information and current images.
  • Join local groups that can help you meet people and grow network. Check out local chambers of commerce or small business development centers and get involved with other people to expand and grow your network.

The tips I’ve given are a starting point. None of them require you to spout off your credentials or attributes but gently and professionally let people know what you are about in a professional and gracious manner.
