Hey there, Vaughn Bullard here! We’re going to talk about changing an image thumbnail size in WordPress.

Why would you want to do this? Well, you may have originally started uploading files that were a different size and you want to change them for design reasons. Well, this is a two-pronged answer.

We’re gonna go to the WordPress administration pages. This is done by typing in the url of your blog followed by forward slash wp-admin. You will be prompted for your administrative username and password. Type it in and press the “Login” button.

Now, go all the way down to the bottom of the administrative menu and hover over “Settings”. In the hover menu, select “Media”. This will bring up the “Media Settings” administrative page.

This page is where you can change the default settings of your uploads, so any future images you upload will have these new settings.

Now all you’ve gotta do is change the dimensions for the height and width. For demonstration purposes, we will increase the size to 200 x 200 pixels and then click ‘Save Changes’.

TIP: Not all images will be the same. That’s OK. However, if you’re feeling like uniformity is your ‘thang’; then you can click ‘Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions’.

Now, what do you do about changing a thumbnail size in your post? Editing your post does this. I have one already queued up here called ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident’. Now what I’m gonna do is select the thumbnail in the visual editing mode. There will be two little boxes hovering over the selected image. These is a delete button and an image settings button; select the image settings button.

Once you’ve selected the image settings button, you will see a box with two tabs. The first tab is “Edit Image” where you can do things like alignment, percentage scaling and linking. What we’re concerned about for this lesson is the ‘Advanced Settings’ tab.

In the ‘Advanced Image Settings’ section you can modify the dimensions of the image by editing the width and height. You can also modify the spacing around the image. So we’ll change the thumbnail size to 200 x 200 pixels wide. Once that is done, we’ll scroll down the box to ‘Update’ … click and there you go! The image thumbnail size has been modified. Don’t forget to hit ‘Update’ on your post as well to save the changes.
